Thanks to the almighty power of Twitter, PhightingOn.com got in touch with infielder Kevin Frandsen, who led the IronPigs last year with a .303 batting average. In this interview
(after the jump), we talk about Frandsen’s decision to come back to the Phillies, where he sees himself fitting in the organization and how he feels about Ryne Sandberg returning to manage Lehigh in 2012. Frandsen just got an invite to the Major League camp for Spring Training, which leads me to believe that he may take over for Michael Martinez, who no longer is required to be on the pro roster (Rule 5 Draft). He’s also a great guy, who was one of the candidates for the 2008 Roberto Clemente award. Continue reading

Yesterday in the Minors: Reading Battles, Loses Late
Coming into Friday’s game against Portland, the Reading Phillies (67-55) were confident: they had one of their better pitchers, 24 year old Tyler Cloyd (seen in picture), starting for them and the team they were playing was 23 games under the .500 mark. Their cleanup hitter,
right fielder Brent Cleven, came into the game riding an eight game hitting streak, and it looked to be an easy win against the struggling Portland Sea Dogs. But, unfortunately, things aren’t always as they seem. Continue reading
Today in the Minors: Reading Routs, ‘Crabs and Threshers Play Extras
The name of the game tonight was pitching. With baby ace Julio Rodriguez (15-7, 3.14
ERA) and top R-Phillie Austin Hyatt (11-6, 4.12 ERA) getting the starts for Clearwater and Reading respectively, great outings were expected from the beginning. Both delivered, as Rodriguez went seven scoreless innings allowing six hits and striking out nine and Hyatt went six innings allowing an unearned run on two hits while striking out six. Today in the Minors: A Night of Impressive Debuts
Even after top players Jarred Cosart and Jon Singleton were traded to Houston, the
Clearwater Threshers had no problem crushing the Tampa Yankees 10-3. During the course of this absolute rout, 7 of the 9 Threshers’ starters had RBIs, 2B Cesar Hernandez and catcher Sebastian Valle, who both went 1-4, being the only two not to contribute an RBI. Included in this great show of offense was a back-to-back-to-back homerun display by RF Brandon Tripp (1), Cyle Hankerd (1) and 3B Travis Mattair (6). This was Hankerd’s debut for Clearwater, and the 26-year-old went 2-4 and scored twice. “It feels awesome to be back,” said Hankerd, “I’ve been working hard to get picked up by a team and I’m blessed to be here.” PhightingOn.com Class A+ Player of the Month Darin Ruf also contributed three RBIs and a homerun, bringing him to a season total of 67 RBIs. Yesterday in Lehigh Valley , Phillies’ ace Roy Oswalt pitched in his second rehab game
after a back injury. Oswalt threw six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. His fastball velocity, which was down in his last rehab start, was back up to the usual 91-92 MPH. Continue reading
