Phillies Comeback Fails, as Marlins Take First Game of Series

Roy Oswalt came into Friday night’s game looking for his seventh win of the season, a win that would put his record at .500 for the year.  Oswalt looked to have his work cut out for him, facing a Marlins team with the seventh worst record in the majors, along with one of the worst offenses in the MLB.  Pair the Marlins weaknesses with the Phillies recently improved offense, and it seemed like the Phillies fourth ace would have absolutely no trouble in assisting the Phillies to a major league best 84th win.  Unfortunately for Oswalt and the rest of the club from Philadelphia, tonight’s game wouldn’t be as easy as they expected. Earlier today, Jimmy Rollins announced via twitter that the mild day-to-day groin strain that he suffered yesterday was actually a“mild grade 2 strain” and that he would be “gone till September”.  The Phillies confirmed this today, placing Rollins on the 15 day disabled list.  Rollins injured the groin yesterday while making a throw on the move.  No other info to how serious the injury is has been released, however, Rollins is first eligible to come off of the DL on September 6th. Roy Hallday Falters in the 9th, as Phillies Fall to Diamondbacks

Roy Halladay is an eight time All-Star, a two-time Cy Young award winner, and arguably the best pitcher in the MLB.  However, one thing that Halladay is not is a god.  The Phillies are a stunning 20-5 with the ace on the mound but sometimes, even Halladay can fail, subjecting the Phillies to a loss, something that they haven’t seen much of lately.  Tonight was one of those times, and despite Halladay’s complete game, 14 strikeout performance, he ultimately ended up being handed his fifth loss of the year after allowing two 9th inning runs. With Hunter Pence Arriving, and Placido Polanco Recovering the Phillies Roster May Be Complete

Pitching wins championships.  It’s something that every general manager in the MLB knows, and it’s the reason that the San Fransisco Giants were World Series champions  last year.  However, a good pitching staff by itself isn’t good enough to win games, because after all, you can’t win if you can’t score.  This year’s Philadelphia Phillies obviously have the pitching to win games, as exemplified by their three starting pitchers representing the team in the MLB All-Star game. Oswalt Shakes Off the Rust in Rehab Start

By: Bryan Sheehan

After last night’s performance inLehigh Valley , it looks like Roy Oswalt  isn’t as ready to return as he had thought. Oswalt pitched a solid outing, going four innings and throwing 72 pitches (12 over the projected limit of 60), while giving up one run and striking out four in the process. Oswalt’s only hit allowed came in the fourth inning, when he left a 2-0changeup  over the heart of the plate, giving Pawtucket hitter Lars Anderson his 10th homerun of the season as he belted it over the right-field wall.
